How to build a city

I went to the Industry Capability Network (ICN) event looking at the project to Rebuild Christchurch after the devastating earthquakes 3 years ago. This was also supported by the Dandenong Council and the South East Melbourne Manufacturing Alliance (SEMMA). I hadn’t realised what an event it was. 70% of the CBD is gone and they have to demolish and clear that before they can start rebuilding.

 

So the demolition is 1,000 major buildings and 10,000 homes. There are some areas where the water in the ground means it can’t be built on for at least another 20 years. And the psychological problem of rebuilding where the disaster occurred. Then they will put in 400km of new roads, 300km of underground pipework, new electrical and communications infrastructure, new – just about everything!

 

So it will take 10 years a over NZ$40B to achieve this. It is beyond the capacity of the city and the country to do this so they need external businesses to provide goods and services in a range of areas. Here is a list of the projects identified already:
