IEEE Technology Predictions
Each year IEEE put together their technology predictions. This is in addition to the intriguing engineering feats we listed in 2025 is a year of promise.
You can get a copy of the full report at 2025 Technology Predictions Report.
I’m going to focus on the technology readiness graph on page 18. The bottom axis shows readiness and the left axis shows expected impact.
No-one will be surprised to see Large Language Models and Drone Adoption as being in deployment phase whereas Nuclear Powered Data Centers are a work in progress. However given the deep pockets of the data center uses this will probable advance faster than some of the other elements. The concerning one that is a long way from readiness but will have a big impact is Tools and Policies for AI Regulation. We really need that now. AI Assisted Drug Discovery is the highest expected impact.
Sustainability is also lagging and that is a big problem because we really need that to improve. We can’t keep trashing our environment and expect it to remain benign.
And of course, AI computing energy is projected to be the largest energy consumer in the future and so Nuclear Powered Data Centers is actually a Sustainability plus.
The one that doesn’t get a mention, mostly because it is off the left hand end of the readiness scale, is Reversible Computing. This is where much of the computing energy that went into a process is then recovered back again afterwards. Took me a bit to understand how this can work but it will have real impact once it is ready for mass adoption. At least 10 years away at the moment. See:
- The future of computing depends on making it reversible
- Reversible Computing Escapes the Lab in 2025
So there is a look at how IEEE view 2025 and the technology trends they expect to progress during the year.
