Australian PMI recovering 2025

Australian Manufacturing PMI

The Australian PMI, or Australian Purchasing Managers Index, measures whether a specific part of the economy is growing or contracting. Since Australian Manufacturing is something I care about, Successful Endeavours is one of the businesses participating in the monthly survey for the manufacturing sector of the economy and we also get access to the reports from that. Those reports are also summarised and publicly available at the Australia S&P Global Manufacturing PMI.

The second half of 2024 was pretty grim with Australian Manufacturing consistently contracting. The most recent report though shows us moving back into growth. Not by much; but this is still a very welcome move. Australian Manufacturing is responsible for millions of the full time jobs in the economy and one of the critical sectors in maintaining the health of the overall Australian Economy.

One thing to understand is that 50 is the score for neither growing nor contracting. Would have been more intuitive if they had of selected 100 for that but this is the way it has been for a long time. January’s score was 50.2 so expanding very slightly. Looking forward to this trend continuing to improve.

Australian Manufacturing is Growing

Australian Manufacturing PMI

It is official. For the past three months Australian Manufacturing has grown each month. This has been confirmed by both AMTIL and Manufacturers’ Monthly.

This is in spite of weak demand in the metals sector. It is good to see some resilience showing as the manufacturing sectors diversify.

The primary data comes from the Australian Industry Group Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (Australian PMI). This is a numerical measure of manufacturing output and numbers above 50 indicate growth and numbers below 50 indicate decline.

So some good news for us all.
