These days, more than ever before, many of the new consumer products developed have to run from batteries. But there are still an enormous number of products that run from mains power, including the battery chargers needed for all those battery powered products.

If you are targeting the world market, the issue of what voltage and what type of power plug to use is one of the earlier requirements you have to identify and satisfy.

So I was amused to come across this novel way of looking at this problem at LifeHacker – 42 Maps that missed the World Atlas.

A more comprehensive guide is available at Mains electricity by country and each country will have specific standards that apply to products sold there. In Australia it is AS/NZS 3112:2011 which covers both the plug and socket.
