Australia Made Awards 2023

Australia Made Awards 2023

This year we are again winners in the APAC insider Australian Made Awards. This time for our manufacturing of electronics products in Australia. We were awarded the Best Complex Electronics Manufacturer 2023.

Best Complex Electronics Manufacturer 2023

Each year APAC insider magazine look at which businesses impress them in a range of industry sectors. The Australian Made Awards focus on businesses that make products in Australia. The high mix of electronic product types we design and make coupled with the level of technical complexity involved got us the win this year.

This is a particularly pleasing win after being a finalist in the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards in August 2023 and an finalist in the IoT Health Award category at IoT Impact 2023. And for those following recent news we have set up a dedicated Electronics Manufacturing facility in Dandenong South so this is a very timely win given our expanding Electronics Manufacturing capacity.

We are also pretty pleased with this recognition for products that are Made in Australia. Complex Electronic Products is our space and this is what makes them profitable and commercially defensible to manufacture in Australia.

Last year we were awarded Best Complex Electronic Product Business 2022 which was focused on our Electronics Design capability.

The trophy is already here and we will update this post once the official web page updates come through at APAC insider.

Finally, we are getting to a trade show. This is the Electronex 2020 trade show finally going ahead at Rosehill Gardens Function Centre in Sydney. We are exhibiting at stand B29 so if you are able to we would love to catch up in person. It has been a long time since that was a practical thing to do.

This event is a celebration of Australian Electronics Manufacturing and that is exactly what we are about. Successful Endeavours exists to change the Australian economy by solving complex challenges through Electronics Design and Embedded Software Development with the resulting solutions then being Made in Australia. We believe that local jobs and local value creation are important for the future of the Australian economy. And the COVID-19 Pandemic has certainly shown us all how true that is.

SMCBA

In parallel the SMCBA (Surface Mount & Circuit Board Association) is running their annual conference. This year the primary sessions are:

  • Best Practices for Improving Manufacturing Productivity”
  •  “Flexible and Rigid Flex Circuits – Design, Assembly and Quality Assessment“
  •  “The “Deadly Sins” of SMT Assembly“
  •  “Embedding Passive and Active Components: PCB Design and Assembly Process  Fundamentals“
  •  “Implementing Advanced “Leading Edge” and “Bleeding Edge” SMT Component Technology“
  •  “Design and Assembly Process Implementation for Flip-Chip, Wafer Level and 3D Semiconductor Package Technologies“
  •  “ESD Control for Electronics Assembly”
  • “Handling Moisture Sensitive Devices”
  • “Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Prevention in Electronics Assembly”
  • “Stockroom Materials – Storage and Distribution”

The program has two internationally renowned presenters for SMT Manufacturing Vern Solberg and Phil Zarrow presenting on the topics.

And I’m presenting two of the open sessions which include a look at the role PCB Design takes in the overall Product Development and the five areas of cost you must manage if you want to minimise the total cost of a product.

PCB Design Tradeoff

This topic looks at the Product Development process and how PCB design fits into that. This is to do with the trade off between product features, what you do in HW, what you do in SW and how to select the technology you want to put on the PCB based on the combination of CEM or in house capability, component lead time, test requirements and product cost.

CEM of course means Contract Electronics Manufacturing. Also called EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Service) or ECM (Electronics Contract Manufacturing).

Total cost of product ownership

The total cost of ownership of a product is a concept that looks at all the investment required to bring a product to market and manage it throughout its life cycle. It isn’t just a case of minimising R&D spend or getting the Bill of Materials to a minimum. That will usually lead to a higher cost product.

What will be presented is a model looking at the five major costs areas involved in the development of a product throughout its life cycle and how taking all five into account can enable you to get the best return on the important investment made in bringing new products to market.

It will also examine a case study where a product development delivered a next generation product to market that allowed the manufacturer to lower their price, triple their profit margin and increase their market share, all at the same time.

Successful Endeavours Exhibiting

And we are also pleased to announce that we are exhibiting this year for the first time. So if you are coming then we are at stand C1 next to Duet Electronics.

The Electronics News Future Awards are the premier Electronics Design awards in Australia, a point that was made at the awards ceremony by one of the sponsors, Kontron. Kevin Gomez, Editor of Electronics News, speaking about the winners in each category said “These six projects represent some of the most outstanding work being done in Australia today”.

As well as handing out trophies, there were three keynote speakers and a round table discussion on the future of Australian Electronics Manufacturing. Electronics News are covering the outcome of the discussion in detail in their October magazine. We look forward to their coverage of this very important topic.

Electronics News released profiles of each of the winning entries at Future Awards 2011: The Winners and Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research; declared that the companies profiled by Electronics News showed that Australia can Win The Innovation Race.

We also appreciate the support from VECCI and ManufactureLink with their coverage of this success as well as the Star News Group.
